Pura x The Met: Madame X Fragrance
Apr 28, 2025
An Iconic Portrait, Reimagined in Scent

Pura is proud to introduce Madame X, the latest addition to their exclusive collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Inspired by John Singer Sargent’s iconic portrait, this scent captures the sensuality, elegance, and mystery of the original 1883-84 oil painting Madame X, translating art into an immersive fragrance experience.
Crafted in partnership with Givaudan Perfumer Olivia Jan, this floral woody fragrance layers rich cedarwood, patchouli, and sandalwood with the elegance of leather and saffron, evoking the dramatic contrast of Sargent’s masterpiece. Informed by Jan’s research on historical fragrance, a delicate touch of violet nods to the finely milled powders Parisian women of the era favored, adding a whisper of sophistication.
“More than 140 years after Madame X made its debut in Paris, the enigmatic portrait remains compelling. The sitter’s mysterious beauty and bold self-fashioning were considered scandalous at the time but today she’s a chic and enduring icon of The Met collection,” said Stephanie Herdrich, Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Painting and Drawing at The Met.
Pura’s collaboration with The Met transforms history into home fragrances, capturing 5,000 years of art through scent. Alongside Madame X, this exclusive collection features Egyptian Sandalwood and Blue Water Lotus, inspired by the Temple of Dendur and embodying the ancient allure of the Egyptian Wing.

Madame X will retail for $23.99 at pura.com on April 21st.

About The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 by a group of American citizens — businessmen and financiers as well as leading artists and thinkers of the day—who wanted to create a museum to bring art and art education to the American people. Today, The Met displays tens of thousands of objects covering 5,000 years of art from around the world for everyone to experience and enjoy. The Museum lives in two iconic sites in New York City—The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters. Millions of people also take part in The Met experience online. Since its founding, The Met has always aspired to be more than a treasury of rare and beautiful objects. Every day, art comes alive in the Museum’s galleries and through its exhibitions and events, revealing both new ideas and unexpected connections across time and across cultures.
